A great song can still disappear if it lands with no plan behind it. Most successful releases are won in the weeks before release day, when you build anticipation, line up playlists and get your content ready to post.
Use this checklist for your next single, EP or music video. It works for independent artists, labels and music producers alike.
Four to six weeks before release
1. Lock your release date
Pick a date and stick to it. Avoid weeks when a big artist in your genre is dropping, and leave enough time for your distributor to deliver the track to every platform.
2. Finalise the master, artwork and credits
Upload the final master, square cover art and complete credits (singer, lyricist, composer, producer, label) to your distributor. Correct credits help with royalties and future IMDb or press mentions.
3. Claim your artist profiles
Make sure you have access to Spotify for Artists, YouTube Official Artist Channel, Apple Music for Artists and Instagram. Update your photo, bio and links on every one.
4. Plan your content calendar
Map out what you will post each day from announcement to release week. A simple plan beats posting randomly.
- Announcement post with the cover art
- 2–3 teaser clips (15 seconds each)
- Behind-the-scenes from the studio or shoot
- Lyric snippets and a countdown
Two to three weeks before release
5. Pitch to playlists
Submit your unreleased song through Spotify for Artists. Spotify asks for pitches at least seven days before release, but earlier is better. Write a short, specific pitch: genre, mood, language and what makes the song different.
6. Shoot short-form videos
Reels and YouTube Shorts are where most new listeners discover music today. Film several hooks from the song so you can test which part people respond to.
7. Brief creators and influencers
Choose creators whose audience actually matches your music. Send them the song early, a clear brief and the date you want them to post.
8. Set up a pre-save link
A pre-save link lets fans add the song to their library before it drops, which gives you a stronger first day. Put it in your bio and every post.
Release week
9. Launch your ads
Run Meta and YouTube ads to the audiences most likely to stream: fans of similar artists, your city or region, and people who watched your teasers. Start small, then put more budget behind the ads that perform.
10. Go live and engage
On release day, post everywhere, go live on Instagram, reply to comments and share every story that tags you. Early engagement signals to platforms that people care about the song.
After release
11. Keep the momentum going
Most songs fade after the first week because the promotion stops. Keep posting fresh content: reaction videos, a dance or trend challenge, an acoustic version or the story behind the lyrics.
12. Check your numbers
Look at Spotify for Artists and YouTube Studio each week. Which cities are listening? Which playlists added you? Which reel brought the most streams? Use this to plan your next release.
